Archaeological work at Pui de Segur will continue for four more years

Last week the campaign of archaeological excavations that the University of Barcelona carried out in agreement with the Pobla de Segur City Council in the old centre of Pui de Segur, directed by the archaeologist Walter Alegría, ended. This spring a new four-year agreement was signed to continue investigating the remains of Esplugues de Segur and Pui de Segur.

This year, despite the inclement weather, considerable progress has been made: it has been possible to uncover a dozen houses in Pui de Segur dating from the 14th and 15th centuries, when a large part of its population had left the place to move to the immediate plain, in the nascent Ribera de Segur (La Pobla de Segur).

The remaining walls of these buildings, in a remarkably good state of preservation, show that most of the houses have quite high walls, three rooms and more than one floor. The entrance doors delimit the main streets of the old Pui de Segur. Remains of domestic utensils and fusaioles have also been found among the ruins that certify the pastoral economy of the town.

The Department of Culture of this City Council makes known the findings of Walter Alegria’s team with different activities (articles in the Roques Roies Bulletin, conference by the director of the excavations, etc…) and, very especially, in guided visits that we carry out annually in excavations. This year’s visit, held on August 11, had forty interested people who listened carefully to the explanations of the director of the excavations and were able to resolve any doubts they raised.
